Jason Mullins interviews Logan Firth - author of Sydney's Convicts

What inspired you to write Sydney’s Convicts?

I started to formulate an idea to write Sydney’s Convicts to predominantly honour my convict ancestry and my deep connection to it. One night in January of 2024, the idea just fully hit me, driving me to writing the full manuscript without sleep within a month.

Have you researched you own family tree?

I am currently in the process of researching my own family ancestry and am proud to be half Greek, partly Scottish, partly English, and partly Australian, with lots of defence force and several convict ancestors.

How have you found the publishing experience?

Being a self-publishing author, I have found there are a lot of advantages in terms of no rejection and getting your work out there. I have found the aftermath marketing and promotion to be a bit of a trick to carry out. I however continue to proactively engage with an emerging fan base and reach my book out to a wider audience.

What advice would you give to others?

It is really disheartening when established companies reject your manuscript. It is really important to push it into publishing companies, established or independent ones. Your story deserves the glory of having not only being cheered by an audience and fan base but being out there in the literature around the world today. Just always remember, once a writer always a writer.

What’s coming next for you?

I have a lot more books and even poems planned to follow in the footsteps of “Sydney’s Convicts”. I can certainly announce the sequel to Sydney’s Convicts to come in the next two years. You will know that is out when you hear the drama and glories of friendship, as well as love, through “A Bushrangers Glory.”
